ABOUT THE ISLINGTON GAZETTE

The Islington Gazette is a bold, campaigning newspaper that has served the Islington community since it was founded on September 20, 1856. It is North London’s oldest established newspaper.

In the same year that the Islington Gazette entered the world – so did Sigmund Freud, Keir Hardie and George Bernard Shaw. Queen Victoria was on the throne and instituted the Victoria Cross. A peace conference was held to settle the Crimean War. And Big Ben was cast at Whitechapel Bell Foundry.

The Gazette – now published every Thursday – prides itself on being a people’s paper, shining a light on the big and small issues that matter to the local community. It provides a platform for the expression of opinions, champions local causes and is essential reading for all those who live and work in Islington.

Its first office was a humble abode above a pie shop in Islington High Street. The first copy was a modest four-page affair costing a halfpenny.

The first editor promised his readers a summary of home and foreign news and said he would devote prominent space to “intelligence of a character especially local”.

The Gazette has remained one of London’s most respected and influential local newspapers and speaks with the authority and knowledge that only 150 years in the community can bring.

While the Gazette has always sought to be contemporary and forward-thinking, it has also aimed to protect and conserve all that is good and traditional in our remarkable borough. It stands for consistency and continuity.

In the very first edition of the Gazette, the first editor set out the paper’s principles in a historic leading article.

He said: “We are neither bigots nor latitudinarians; we advocate nothing opposed to the welfare of society and the best interests of our neighbourhood; we shall strive to do our best for the physical, the intellectual, the moral and above all, the spiritual welfare of all classes in the great parish of Islington, without distinction of rank, politics, or sect.

“We shall oppose any attempt to get one class against another or to excite heart burnings or party strife among men who should be united in a bond of brotherhood; in a word, we shall avoid extremes of all kinds, except that which consists in standing forth boldly and fearlessly in the GREAT CAUSE OF TRUTH.”
